If you’re curious about registering as a stem cell donor, or about what the process involves this page provides a list of resources that will hopefully get you started.
About Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplantation
- Some basics of stem cell transplants from the Mayo Clinic.
- Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation Fact Sheet from the National Cancer Institute.
How to register as a donor
The process for registering as a donor varies by organization and jurisdiction, but here are some links to the organizations I’ve been able to identify:
- Canada: Canadian Blood Services, OneMatch program
- United States: The National Marrow Donor Program
- Great Britain: The British Bone Marrow Registry
- Worldwide: Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide directory of stem cell donor registries
The donation process
Having not been a donor myself, I can’t speak to the donation process, but there are a number of resources that talk about the process and what to expect as a donor.
Canadian Blood Services provides information about the donation process through their OneMatch site (although because of the design of the site I can’t seem to find the direct link to the pages in question). The National Marrow Donor Program has a page featuring some Myths and Facts about Donation. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute also has a information about both the Bone Marrow and Peripheral Stem Cell donation process.
