Charitied to death

Ok, so I’m on Facebook now. And why not? Everyone is doing it! And I’m all about following the crowd. I mean, hey, it’s a place to start.

Anyway, the point of that is that I joined a group there related to raising money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Seemed like a good idea, raising money for cancer research. And then I got to thinking: How many cancer charities are there out there? And how many Executive Directors, and Directors of Communications? How many advertising and public relations budgets? How much money actually goes to anything useful? And how the hell can anyone realistically keep track?

And why is it always about one type of cancer or another? Can’t we work to cure all cancers? Or maybe there should be a cancer Olympics? Is it the one with the biggest budget that wins?

After all, it is very possible that some of the biggest contributors to the cancer epidemic are environmental. Shouldn’t we all be focusing on the root cause? Maybe I should join the Green Party? Start an organic farm? Slash the tires of SUVs? So many other possibilities…

I think I am going to try and find links to every cancer charity or foundation out there. I’m just curious exactly how many different organizations there are. And how many of them are doing essentially the same thing? Maybe they all have their own roll, and maybe I’m just being difficult. I guess I’ll find out.

So as I work away on this list, please feel free to contribute any I have forgotten and, of course, any opinions on the value or futility of my efforts are welcome as well.

This will be fun! Keep checkin’ in…
