Issues? What about ethics?

After weeks of back and forth about which party and leader will be best for Canada, it’s all getting a little bit dull. The Green Shift, Harper’s non-platform, Layton’s “Kitchen Table” schtik. I get it.

But it wasn’t until I saw the Cadman story in the news again tonight that I remembered what this election is really about. Apparently Harper’s own audio expert has submitted his report about the Cadman tapes and he has concluded that “key portion” of the tapes were not edited, as Harper has claimed. You know the key part, right? The part where Harper talks about trying to buy off Chuck Cadman, suffering from terminal Cancer, in order to get his vote for a confidence vote in the House of Commons? That one.

We have to remember that this is the Steven Harper whose entire campaign in 2006 was about booting out the Liberals because of their corruption. The same Steven Harper who quickly followed up by poaching Liberal David Emerson by offering him a Cabinet post. The same Steven Harper who fired the head of an arms-length safety agency because she didn’t agree with him. The same Steven Harper that passed fixed-date election legislation and then proceeded to ignore it because, well, it didn’t suit him anymore.

So, despite whether or not you think the Liberal’s Green Shift will work, or whether the NDP is doing too much business-bashing or the Greens are a one-issue (have a closer look, Jeffrey Simpson) party living in a dreamland, the reality is the Conservatives have basically given Canadians the finger and then asked us to vote for them again.

Apparently there are a solid 30%+ of Canadians who like that sort of thing. I guess that’s their choice, but it’s a little disturbing if you ask me.
